The SIG 522 is a ‘tactical twenty two’ that is perhaps the best of those currently available. Not only is it comparatively accurate, but it is possibly the least ammo sensitive – even feeding many brands of subsonic. The SIG really deserves the kinds of adaptation possible with the AR. There isn’t the plethora of accessories that are available for the AR, but there is a lot of scope for turning the 522 into a versatile weapon system.
The Samson SIG 522 rail allows you to get 19″ of rail space on the top of your rifle, making for great flexibility in the positioning of optics and in co-witnessing. The Samson STAR SIG 522 rail has four MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rails onto which you can fit your choice of sights, lasers, lights, foregrips and bipods. Machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum and hard black anodized, the quad rail will not rust. You can fit this quad rail without making any permanent alterations to the rifle.
The 522 is supplied without iron sights to keep its price down. The factory SIG sights are very expensive and the factory front sight can only be used with the factory rear. Samson Manufacturing have come up with their own SIG 522 sights which sit at the same height relative to the line of sight as an M16A2 rearsight. You use the Samson SIG 522 front sight with a BUIS rearsight such as the Troy, YHM or Magpul MBUS. The front sight flips up under spring tension when actuated via a button and locks in either position. Two types of foresight protector are manufactured. One has the same style of wing protector as the M-16. The other has AK/H&K style ring protectors that give a ‘circle within a circle’ for rapid aiming.
The SIG 522 was built to take the excellent Black Dog magazine. There is also a Black Dog 50 round AR drum mag which works very well with the SIG 522. Manufactured from polycarbonate, the 50 round Black Dog is intended for semiauto use only, but can be made to work with a fully automatic weapon with some fine tuning.
